How to Build Habits for Permanent Change: Part 2

So we covered 4 steps to see permanent change and I hope it blessed you last week.  Most of us have good intentions at the beginning of a New Year. We usually feel guilt and remorse for overindulging on food and not exercising enough.

It’s amazing how people self flagellate themselves for being, well, HUMAN.

So if 2017 did not turn out the way you wanted it to, then how will 2018 look different?

“I hope so” and luck are not good strategies.

Change is an art and a process.

Most people want to skip the process and go right to the success. But it doesn’t work that way.

You have to “pay your dues”  if you want to see things come to fruition.

So without further ado here are the other 4 tips to see permanent change.

#5 – Practice only one habit at a time. Numerous studies show people are typically successful when they focus on one habit at a time.  This can frustrate people at first but really you want to wait until you have been consistent at it for 3-4 weeks before adding a new one.  Studies also show a 100% failure rate when people try to introduce 2 or more habits at once.  Most of the time when people say they can do more, it is their ego talking. No one wants to be an underachiever or admit they can’t do something.  However, if we want change we have to make it digestible. Too much change too quick always seems to overwhelm people and they get frustrated and quit.

#6 – Get rid of paralysis by analysis.  Too often we overthink things and spend more time thinking and overanalyzing then actually doing.  The best way to learn is by doing.  I can’t tell you how many times I see people “major in minors.”  Somone who is 50 pounds or more overweight tells me they are worried about an artificial sweetener in meal replacement shake but will turn around and eat fast food.  Reading books and getting knowledge is not a bad thing but I know too many “lifelong students”  who “know” everything but do nothing. So pick a few action steps and attack them. I like the term “fail forward.”  You might not have success or you might screw something up, but the more you do this, the more you will be able to dial in your plan.

#7 – Surround yourself with the right people – Social support is vital for your success.  You are who you hang out with. I have said this time and time again. If you want to get healthy and lose some weight but all the people you are around are focused on which happy hour they are going to, then it is always going to be battle for you. There is some trait in humans that we like to sabotage each other when someone is trying to grow in an area and others are not (but know they probably should). Then they try to keep that person down at their level.  I’m not saying don’t be friends with them or if it is your spouse then you just don’t divorce them. What I am saying is find people who are pursuing similar things. There is power in groups that are connected and can support, encourage and hold each other accountable.

#8 – Be accountable to someone.- Everyone needs someone to hold them accountable especially in the beginning of the process of change. A good coach will keep you focused, call B.S. on your excuses, encourage you and give you positive reinforcement. Two areas I still need accountability in my life are my business and my spiritual life. I still have coaches in these areas because I know myself too weill. Going on my own would mean a backslide. Having a mentor will help you get from point A to point B much quicker.

So there you go – 8 great steps to see the changes you want in any area of you life.  Remember this is a process and I often say fitness is 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Expect setbacks and problems.  They are part of the process.   If you need mentorship and coaching as well as a support group, then give us a call. I feel we offer a great supportive environment and have dedicated and caring coaches who put your results first.

All you have to do is reply to this email and we will set you up for a transformation session where will go through your goals, lifestyle habits, and other pertinent information to design a program that fits your life and delivers results.

P.S.  Just a reminder tomorrow night is our big 180 event at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Burnsville at 7pm.  If you feel your life is heading down the wrong road it is time to whip a 180 and get on track. Myself and other fitness pros will be revealing a special 180 plan to get your health back the right away. There are too many quick fix diets and programs out there and the vast majority are not sustainable. If you want TRUE SUCCESS something must be sustainable for the long haul. Think of it like a marathon. If you come up out sprinting you will not maintain that and will run out of energy early.

P.S.S.  Have you seen our Get Fit Lakeville facebook group? We put all our best social media content there. Special workouts, tips, online classes, and recipes for group members only.  The best part is that it is completely FREE. Click hereto join.
