Friday was big day for my personal training gym in Lakeville.

We officially became debt free!

Early on in my career as a fitness gym owner, I racked up up about $65,000 in debt on credit lines with a combination of poor business decisions, lack of financial discipline, and failing to track my numbers accurately.


At first it seemed like a mountain I could never climb.  I actually tried to take the easy way out and use a debt negotiator to lower the amount due, but after a few months of that, I didn’t feel right.

I was responsible for getting myself into the mess – I needed to take responsibility for getting out of it.

Thus began the long process of chipping away at it.

And to be honest…it didn’t always go well.

I tried being really aggressive by making big payments only to kill my cash flow.  That required me to use credit lines and go back into more debt to keep things going.

Then I tried building up big cash reserves only to slow down too much and not get anywhere…once again killing my cash flow. I was saving too much and not paying down debt and expenses.


Basically it took a lot of trial and error. But this past year I finally found the right balance of saving and paying.

There was no secret equation. It just took PERSISTENCE and ACCOUNTABILITY to get there.


I was determined not to quit and had my business coach keep me accountable to getting it done. Despite mistakes, I learned how not to pay down debt.

It reminded me of other big goals I have accomplished like learning Spanish and getting a college football scholarship.

  • They took time but quitting was not an option, no matter how long it took
  • There were several setbacks
  • I wanted to quit at times. Those were big turning points
  • I needed a coach to help me get there
  • There was a strong purpose behind each one
I see this all the time in fitness. People think things like…

  • I’ve tried everything – nothing works
  • I’m too old
  • I’m too fat
  • My body is too broken

Do you say these things to yourself?

Will it be easy? No.

Will there be setbacks? Yes.

Will it be worth it? Hell yes!
