This past weekend I did my 5th fitness competition.  This means exercise and dieting down to a super low body fat percentage.   It requires a lot of focus, discipline, sacrifice, and persistence.

I had done these before but this time I went bigger and better.  I hired a coach and did a 6 month plan instead of the 3 month plan I had typically done in the past.

Everything was more challenging this time around and I was more precise in preparation.

Why Would A Guy My Age Do Such A Thing?

A lot of people asked “why would you do this?”   They think or say “that is crazy.”

Is it because I want to show of my body.  Pure vanity?

Am I having a mid life crisis? Trying to hold onto my youth?

No, I don’t think so.

There are two main reasons I did this.

1.) Lead by example – I hate people who preach one thing but do another.  “Do as I say not as I do.”  I can’t sit and tell all of you to pursue goals and hit them when I am not doing it myself.

2.) Prepare me for bigger and better things – I’ve got some bigger goals in life that have to do with my business and faith.  This process has taken my mental toughness and discipline to a new level. Now that this is over I will rest a bit but it has prepared me well for some other big things I want to pursue.

It’s Not About the Prize

Often they say the journey is more rewarding than the destination and I find it is true.

It was the lessons along the way and overcoming challenges that threatened to knock me off course that I really treasure rather than being on stage and winning a trophy.

Too often people settle or give up when adversity comes along.  But my biggest reward was meeting things head on.

And believe me there was plenty of adversity:

  • Being sick when I started
  • A water damage in our house
  • A challenging real estate deal when trying to sell one of our investment properties
  • Sticking to the plan on our hunting trip and fishing weekend.
  • A mold issue in our rental property
  • A major setback with a part of my business
  • Issue at daughter’s school with bullying

Despite all these things I finished the race and completed the mission.

My favorite Bible passage rings in my ears constantly  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”  Philippians 4:13.

I’m nothing special.  No better than anyone else. We all have it within us to do great things above and beyond what we think we are capable of doing.

What’s holding you back from doing something audacious? Maybe even a little scary?

Believe it – you have it in you and you can do it.

Fitness can be a great dress rehearsal for you.  Dialing in your fitness and nutrition sets the process of discipline, consistency, and dedication.

It’s your year so go out and seize it!

Dedicated to your success!

P.S.  I’m excited about my new online personal training program that takes down geographical barriers.  I call it “Transform in 12.”  It is using some great technology to develop a plan for you to do in your own gym or in your own home, wherever you may live.  I have 2 spots open right now.  All you have to do to learn more is reply to this email to set up a 15 minute phone consultation.  If we both determine this program is a good fit for you, one of those spots is yours.
