Turn Distractions Into Success

Never in history have we lived with more distractions.

We are bombarded daily.

So we have to work extra hard to stay focused on what truly matters.

Honestly, distractions in my opinion are one of the biggest things that keep us from moving forward.

One minute we start to work on our goals and the next we are scrolling through our smart phone caught up in some social media post or news story that popped up on our phone.

Research says it takes 20 minutes to reset your brain when you get distracted.

So eliminating distractions as much as possible is crucial if you are doing some of your most important things.

How to Turn Distractions into Success:

First – turn off your cell phone when you are doing important things. Or put it on airplane mode when you are working out.  If you are like me, use it for music.

One of my pet peeves is seeing people in the gym doing the “Instagram superset” –  a set of curls alternated with a selfie for Instagram. I have actually seen people playing games on their phone between sets.

How effective and focused is that workout?

When I’m working on big projects, I put my phone in the other room or turn it off.

And you know what? I get things done because I am not always starting and stopping.

I really think people don’t even realize how much they are interrupted during the day.

The other type of distraction is the willful one.

I can’t tell you how many people have been talking about the show “Game of Thrones.”  It’s almost cult like.

Personally, I have decided binge watching Netflix and getting hooked into tons of TV series is another waste of my time.

You see, my time is precious and my life is going by fast so I don’t want to waste it living vicariously through a bunch of TV shows.

Many times I hear the same people who complain about their lack of success in the same breath go into an in depth analysis of their favorite Netflix series.

Speaking of living vicariously…

How about sports?

One of the dumbest things – in my opinion – is a grown man wearing another grown man’s name on a jersey.

When their team wins they say “we won.” No, the team won. You don’t play for the team!

Don’t get me wrong. I love to watch good sports – provided the important things are done first.  I just see people put so much time and effort into fantasy leagues and knowing sports stats.

Where could all that knowledge and energy be put to better use?

How about parents getting over involved with their kids?

Too often I see marriages damaged because the parents over schedule their kids for everything they can squeeze in.  Life is about running from this tournament to that practice.  Many times parents are forced to “divide and conquer” spending little or no time together.

Gee, wonder why your marriage isn’t going well and why the kids are always injured, tired, or struggling in school.

Being a good parent is not based on how many things your kids are in, despite what our society seems to think.

My kids are in sports and I love to support them and cheer them on.  But we have a 2 activity rule in our house.  They do no more than 2 activities at a time.  That way they can focus and they are not spread so thin that other things start to suffer.

It is not my point to sit and lecture in this email.

My point is to wake people up.

So often in my personal training studio in Lakeville I see people break down into tears because their physical health has collapsed and they are miserable. This didn’t happen overnight. It was a slow grinding process or choices made over time.

The worst thing I hear is “I’m too busy.”  WE ARE ALL BUSY!  As if you are the only one who is busy…PLEASE.

The big difference is what we decide to be busy with. Meaningless crap like Game Of Thrones and video games or do we stay busy doing things that really matter?

Things like:

Spending time with our spouse and kids
Reconnecting with an old friend
Reading and studying to gain more knowledge and change our mindsets.
Serving others

I guarantee at the end of your life you will not say “I wish I had watched season 5 of Walking Dead.”

Live life with no regrets.
