Calling Audibles In Life

A football player is pointing at a group of players on a field.

"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." Proverbs 16:9

It's hard to believe football training camps are starting in a few weeks. Football has always been a BIG part of my life. I love the start of a new season.

In football there's a term called an "audible." This is when the quarterback switches up the play. Something he sees in the defense alignment in front of him makes him think the play called in the huddle won't work well. Or the defense is exposed and there's a better play to call in order to take advantage of them.

Audibles are not just useful in football. They are needed in real life.

Many times we make plans and they seem good at the time but don't work out the way we want them to.

I started out 2022 with some aggressive fitness goals and what I thought were solid plans of action to achieve them.

However, I strained a muscle in my rib cage and then a month later I tweaked my knee playing volleyball on spring break.

Neither of these were part of the plan so I had to call some audibles.

Here are some of those "audibles" that healed my knees and kept me on track with my goals.

  • Implementing more of the KNEES OVER TOES protocols to improve joint function
  • Switching lower body that allowed me to work my muscles without stressing out my joints
  • Adding in more anti-inflammatory supplements to heal myself from the inside out
  • Making rest and recovery a high priority instead of trying to force my way forward

Because I was willing to adapt and redefine my steps, I am back on track to accomplish ALL of my 2022 goals.

Even me, an experienced fitness professional has to call audibles.

If you look at your current fitness plan (or lack thereof) is it working or do you need to call an audible?

It might look like your fitness goals are done for 2022.

Don't give up! Call an audible.

You can still get great results with in person or online training. We have a great audible called the "12 Week Transformation Program."

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
