Those Who Stay Will Become Champions

"And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?" Matthew 7:3

If you spend any time on social media you see no shortage of opinions.

Everyone thinks they have the "truer truth."

People are really good about getting self righteous and condemning others.

Does that really change anything?

Many people I know spend a lot of time on Facebook ranting and pointing fingers at others when in reality, they have plenty of their own issues.

It's takes ZERO effort to complain but it takes hard work to change for the better.

I've had to realize that firsthand. In order to change the things around you, you need to first change yourself.

Early on in our marriage, my wife and I were struggling.

In my mind it was always her fault.

I justified being a workaholic - telling myself the lie that I was "providing" for the family. Fitness became another idol. When I wasn't working I was at the gym. Never was I home to help out.

Every time she would challenge me, I got defensive and came up with lame excuses to justify my selfish behavior.

During counseling it became clear to me that our marriage would NEVER get better unless I started to work on myself and not worry about her.

As I grew in my relationship with God, I learned to be a servant rather than selfish and our marriage improved.

By no means have I reached the "holy grail" of being a great husband, but we are in a much better place today because I finally dealt with the "log" in my own eye and took action.

Was it easy? No.

Did it happen fast? No.

Was it worth it? YES!

Every time we flip the calendar to a new year, we hope things will get better.

Hope is not a good strategy. It doesn't work without intentional action.

Where do you need to take action in 2021?

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
