Our Job as Parents is Not To Raise Good Kids

A man in a top hat poses with two little girls

Last week was Father's Day and I was grateful for the love I got from my family. Being a dad fits the Army slogan "It's the toughest job you'll ever love."

It's an important role and I take it seriously.

Proverbs 22:6 says "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."'

This passage makes me think of a conference I was at several years ago. Famous author/speaker Andy Andrews said "it's not up to us to raise good kids. It's up to us to raise good adults."

This really stuck with me because I realize as a parent, my job is to develop my kids as best as I can so they are able to function in the real world.

A BIG part of that is leading by example.

What you do means more than what you say.

Years ago I was coaching my stepson in football. There was 'THAT' parent who was constantly complaining about how lazy his kid was. He was always very critical of his son.

The elephant in the room was that this dad was at least 50 pounds overweight and never played sports or exercised in his entire life.

It was obvious why his son wasn't responding to his criticisms. "Do as I say not as I do" never works.

'Train up the child in the way he should go' by SHOWING what's important, not telling. 'When he is old, he will not depart from it.'

Actions ALWAYS speak louder than words.

When it comes to health and fitness, it is vital we model a healthy lifestyle for our kids.

If we are not taking care of ourselves how can we expect our kids to?

The latest research even backs this up.

According to the National Institute Of Health, kids with obese parents were 67% more likely to be obese themselves.

Being obese sets us all up for a host of physical and mental problems - our kids will suffer even more, from an earlier age.

I know none of us want that for our kids.

And with over 70% of adults being overweight it doesn't look good for our kids' future unless we take action to change that trend.

I get it. We're all being pulled in different directions all day long. It's hard to find the energy and time, or even the knowledge to know what to do. Staying motivated and getting results is one of the hardest pieces of the puzzle.

Does this sound like you ?

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
