Playing It Safe Is Dangerous

A yellow sign that says `` safe zone '' on a black background.

Proverbs 22:13 says The lazy man says, "there is a lion without, I shall be killed in the streets."

Too often we let the imaginary "lions" in our life keep us in the "playing it safe" zone.

Playing it safe is one of the riskiest things we can do.

I can't think of many worse things than being 3,5...10 years down the road and seeing ZERO progress in life.

We were not created to be mediocre. But unfortunately many people choose to stay in the "safe zone."

Not smart.

Last month I started a new program. It has challenged me in ways I needed to be challenged.

I'm now lifting heavier weights I haven't lifted in years and I am in striking distance of one of my "bucket list" goals to deadlift 500 pounds.

I got close a few years back but came up a little short.

Then I started to play it safe rationalizing why I stopped pursuing that goal with reasons like:

"475 was good enough (Ugh, I hate good enough.)

"I'm over 50 maybe I shouldn't lift heavy"

"It's too much of a risk to hurt my back."

Blah, blah, blah.

One thing I have learned about workouts is that if they aren't challenging you they get boring. Playing it safe leads to boredom. Which leads to stagnation and then...nothing...

Boredom is a BIG reason people quit working out.

Also I hate the word maintain. There is no maintain. Maintain means you are coasting and coasting means you are going downhill.

You are either getting better or worse.

Is it time to step it up and get better?

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!
