That's What It's All About!

Yesterday at church our pastor had us stand up to do the Hokey Pokey! Remember that from when you were a kid?

"You put your right foot in, you put your right foot out,

You put your right foot in and you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!"

It was great to stand up and move in the middle of the sermon and that's a familiar childhood classic so people could easily sing along.

But he wasn't just giving us a movement break like it was in kindergarten. He used it to illustrate a point.

Where in life do you have one foot in and one foot out?

Hmmm. Good question.

Is it your faith? Your family? Fitness? Friendships? Finances? Food? Fill in the blank...

If we're honest with ourselves, we all could answer that question in one way or another.

Let's focus on fitness and nutrition since that's what we do.

If we have one foot in, we're working towards a goal. But if something appealing comes up - like cake, cookies, wine, etc. - we're easily persuaded. We eat healthy throughout the week and then make up for it with too many treats on the weekend.

If we have one foot in, we're working out a few times each week. But we don't have a goal or plan with progressions that will help build muscle and starve fat.

If we have one foot in, we might be following a workout plan but aren't addressing nutrition, sleep or stress. All of which play major roles in the big picture.

If you have one foot in, is it time to turn yourself around?

When we have both feet in, we're all in. We're fully committed - no matter what.

When we have both feet in, we have support and accountability. And when unexpected obstacles come our way, we declare our plan and hold true to ourselves.

When we have both feet in, we remember our purpose, picture ourselves at the finish line, the favorite jeans fit, and we keep moving forward until we reach the goal.

When we have both feet in, we are in control.

Sounds pretty good to have both feet in doesn't it?

Is it time to turn yourself around?

We are here to help!

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
