What Do They See?

A woman and a girl are doing push ups on the ground.

When my nieces and nephews were younger I had the ultimate privilege of hanging out with them on many occasions. Sometimes just because and other times when care was needed.

I remember one particular time when my youngest niece was 3. Everyone else was at out of town basketball tournaments so I got to spend the day with her. Church was on my agenda so off we went. We climbed to the very top row at Hosanna (her choice) and she was taking it all in. She couldn't stop smiling during the worship music. It's good to be 3. At one point, I looked down to find her arms folded across her chest while patting her hands to the beat of the music. I was doing the exact same thing.

After church we went to a restaurant for dinner. Water glasses came and I started chewing on the little ice cubes. In no time, she was also chewing on ice cubes. Quickly I had to change my tune. I didn't want her chewing on ice so I had to make an effort to model a healthier choice.

Kids watch our every move, don't they? It may not seem that way but they do. Not just kids, but co workers, siblings, friends too. What will they see? What will they hear?

Do you say nice things to yourself or do you verbally express your displeasure with how you look?

Do you come home to a healthy snack or do you crack open a beer or pour a glass of wine?

Do you make exercise a priority or does that happen only if there's time in between driving kids here and there?

My sister and I used to run marathons. Many hours were spent on long training runs and 5K races. She had to fit in her runs around the activities of 4 kids. But she fit them in. Her hubby always brought the kids to watch our races. This past October, her oldest daughter ran a half marathon. Like mother like daughter.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
