Attack Your Big Goals Like A Mogul Hill

A person is skiing down a snow covered slope.

And it shall be said, "Build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people's way." Isaiah 57:14.

I thought of skiing this week since the ski area near my gym started making snow.

Skiing is one of my favorite things to do. I'm excited to get out there more this winter because it gets me outside and makes me feel like a kid again.

Skiing here in Minnesota is fun but going out west to the real mountains is a whole different league.

One of the most challenging things on mountains are mogul hills.

They can be difficult yet fun at the same time.

A few years ago during one of my runs, I missed a turnoff and ended up on one of the nastiest mogul hills I had ever seen.

It was extremely steep and loaded with moguls the size of cars.

There was no way out so I had to figure out how to get down it without killing myself.

As I stared down to the bottom of the hill, I could feel myself starting to get psyched out.

I had a choice.

I could let fear take over and wait for the ski patrol to rescue me, or I could remove the obstruction.

What I did was put my focus on the first section. I started down and made some strong turns between the moguls. I made it.

Then I focused on the next section and completed a few more turns.

I repeated this process for the rest of the sections on the hill and in no time I had made it down the hill unscathed. No need for the ski patrol rescue!

Funny thing is that big goals can be a lot like mogul hills.

They can seem intimidating and impossible when you only look at the end result. However, if you break them down, mogul by mogul, they become attainable.

By preparing the way correctly - having the right plan that takes you through the step by step process - you can more effectively remove the obstacles (steer through the moguls) and build success.

When you make it through it always feels rewarding because it was so tough.

Now go out and conquer those "mogul hills" in your life.

Dedicated to your results!

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
