Eliminate and Concentrate

Thankful for Adversity

A person is cutting a tree branch with a pair of scissors.

John 15:2 says "He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful."

Last week I experienced some much needed "pruning."

Being a type A personality I'm always going and had a BIG list to finish by the end of the year.

I was going nowhere in a million directions.

Lucky for me I surround myself with "wise counselors" who tell me the truth.

The truth this time was I was heading off a "cliff" off burnout.

I was running around trying to make everyone happy and it was zapping all my mental, physiclal and emotional energy.

It came to a head on a Friday night after coming home exhausted. I was "Mr. Crabby Pants" snapping at my wife and daughters over trivial things.

They had done nothing wrong. I had.

I had allowed myself to get overwhelmed and was experiencing the consequences.

After apologizing to my family for my inexcusable behavior, I knew something had to change.

That week during my own coaching call it became clear what needed to go.

I was planning a big ministry trip to Pakistan to support my pastor friend. This was on the agenda right before the holidays and was quite the process to secure a visa.

In addition, I won a scholarship to an online coaching program that would require a lot of time and mental enegry that I didn't have.

My tank was on E.

The advice from my coach was to do more with less and take things off.

I put the Pakistan trip on hold.

After that I opted out of the coaching program. Even though it was worth thousands of dollars and a great opportunity, I knew I couldn't put a price on my health.

Since I pruned those branches I have slept better, my stress level has dropped from "defcom 10" to tranquility and I can focus on less.

Because I eliminated I can now concentrate on less and have been much more effective and productive in ALL my roles.

My "sanity" has returned. I wake up daily with a clear focus and no heavy weight on my chest because I was simply trying to do too much.

I have truly pruned branches not producing which has allowed me to tend to the ones that matter most RIGHT NOW.

I wonder how many people need to "eliminate and concentrate" like me.

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
