Remove the Planks From Your Eyes First
One of my favorite teachings in the Bible is from Jesus's legendary sermon on the mount.
In Matthew 7:3-5 he says "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's"
Just look at our society. Criticizing and ripping others to shreds is a national past time. It is even celebrated.
Sadly, there are whole shows based on this.
The hard truth is that...
-
Criticizing others does not accomplish anything. It does not move you forward in your own life.
-
Focusing on the faults of others distracts you from the work you need to be doing
One time in my life where this became apparent was early on in my marriage. My wife and I were both married before, so with that comes emotional baggage brought into the marriage.
In the beginning we were fighting a lot. If I am honest, it wasn't looking good and looking like divorce #2. Luckily a man of God came into my life. He helped me realize that instead of worrying about what my wife was or wasn't doing, I needed to focus on dealing with my issues (planks in my eye) not hers (specks in her eyes).
I can honestly tell you when I did that, things started to get better. Not that I have arrived as I am a work in progress, but when I dealt with my head trash and bad habits things in our relationship improved. However it took me owning my own garbage and being willing to clean it up before things got better.
This wisdom from Jesus rings true for all part of life... even fitness. So often I hear people criticize others for getting in shape calling them "fanatics" and "obessed." Yet here they sit... overweight and miserable. The discipline other people possess probably makes them insecure and realize what they are not doing. So it is easier to deflect that into criticism instead of actually dealing with their own issues.
Is it time to deal with some "planks" in your own eyes?
What are they?
-
Carrying too much weight
-
Winded when you climb stairs
-
Feeling weak and brittle
-
Always pulling muscle or tweaking your back
