Time for a Fresh Start?

A yellow sign that says a fresh start just ahead

One of the things I loved about teaching was the new group of kids who came through the doors each September.

They had bright shiny faces, new shoes, new clothes and backpacks full of school supplies. They were eager to see their friends, play on the playground, learn new things, grow and make new friends.

Giving my classroom a fresh new look each year was exciting too. Crisp clean paper covered the bulletin boards. New inspirational words filled the walls. Fresh name tags went on the tables (before little hands peeled them off). All the markers still had lids and my own desk was free from piles - all for the time being anyway!

No matter how the previous school year ended or how much clutter had piled up in June, September was a fresh start... for everyone. And I liked that.

Though I'm no longer teaching, September still feels like a fresh start. Much like January minus the snow! A brand new year...new goals...new dreams...new hopes for a new you.

Just like the kids, we can often use a fresh start when September comes. Summer in Minnesota is worth the wait. But cabin trips, BBQs, outdoor concerts, pool gatherings and now the MN State Fair can really take a toll on our health and fitness.

As Puravida Fitness, we often hear people tell us they will get focused again in the fall... when they aren't as busy...after the wedding / graduation / vacation... once the college drop off is complete... Fill in the blank. It will happen then...

And though intentions are good...the truth is, there's never a good time. Calendars will always be full.

Do you need a fresh start? With your fitness? With your nutrition?

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
