You Are A Leader

A person is writing the word leadership on a blackboard.

1 Corinthians 9:27 is one of my favorite passages.

"I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified."

It's all about leading by example. This hits home big time because I'm a parent, husband and business owner. Many are looking to me as the example.

I remember when my stepson was playing sports in high school. I got to know the other dads because we had coached together for years in little league football and other sports.

There was one dad who was always getting on his son's case for not working out more.

You see, his son was a gifted athlete but lazy when it came to getting in the weight room and doing off season conditioning.

However, this very same dad was obese and had never worked out in his life.

This was the classic case of "do as I say not as I do."

Kids follow what they see, not what they hear.

Like it or not if you are a parent ...you are a leader.

And like or not you lead by example.

The latest studies show that a kid with one obese parent has a 50 percent chance of becoming an obese adult.

Obesity in children is the cause for depression, emotional and behavioral disorders, low self-esteem, lack of motivation, eating disorders, poor body image and an overall low quality of life.

Author and speaker Andy Andrews says "it's not our job to raise good kids but good adults."

To me it's worth the effort to stay in good shape and set an example for my kids so they too can develop the habits and discipline they need to have a high quality of life.

How about you?

What kind of example are you setting?

The great news is it's never too late to change. The story is not over and you have the power to build the habits and change your quality of life.

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
