Are You A Frog In Boiling Water?

A frog is sticking its head out of a trash can.

Have you ever heard of the story of the frog in boiling water?


If you put a frog in a pot of boiling water it will instantly leap out. But if you put it in a pot filled with pleasantly tepid water and gradually heat it, the frog will remain in the water until it boils to death.


Crazy, I know. But to be honest, I've seen humans play out this scenario time and time again.


For example, there's a convenience store near my gym.


I've become familiar with the staff there since I go there quite frequently.


I've noticed a girl who works there has gained a ton of weight. 


When she first started going there I noticed she was healthy and petite. (I'm a fitness guy - I notice these things.)


Every time I went in, she was munching on some snacks or drinking a sugary pop.


Fast forward to now. She seems miserable - like her body has become a prison.


I have watched this negative transformation of hers happen through the years. 


It's a painful reminder of how gaining unwanted weight happens like the frog in boiling water.


You start compromising and making decisions that take you in the wrong direction...


Decisions like...


  • Skipping the gym because you are too tired
  • Eating crap food because you are stressed or it's too hard to make something healthy
  • Drinking alcohol every night to wind down after a stressful day.

The consequences of these frequent compromises don't show up right away. But over time they add up to poor health and weight gain. 


One day you are like the frog in boiling water. It might be a bad report from your doctor, seeing a picture of yourself or not fitting into your clothes anymore.


The water is now boiling.


However, unlike the frog you can escape.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
