Thankful for Adversity

A man is pushing a large rock up a hill.

"For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs; you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance." Psalm 66:10-12

Every day I write at least 3 things I'm thankful for. I believe an attitude of gratitude is important for a healthy mindset.

There are many things I am thankful for - my family, friends, health and doing a business I love. But one thing that might seem strange to be thankful for is ADVERSITY.

I'm actually thankful for adversity because that's when I've had to grow in character and overcome. I have always came out better on the other side.

If life was always comfortable and easy I would never have to do anything but sit back and exist.

Crushing burdens like finacial setbacks, big letdowns, and conflict with others have all taught me valuable lessons I would have never learned had I not gone through the "fire" of adversity.

This law also applies to workouts. You have to create some adversity to transform your body.

If the weights are always comfortable and exercises easy, you'll never see improvement.

Too often I see people who don't want to make their workouts challenging. They are afraid of getting hurt, looking stupid or simply stuck in their own "box" of doing what they know even though it isn't delivering results anymore.

2022 has been the year of "unique and different" for my own training.

I have done some really different and crazy workouts that forced me out of my own comfort zone.

On paper they looked frickin crazy. But when I did them I loved them, realizing I needed a new challenge and fresh download of programming.

It has put me in a place of "great abundance." I'm in great shape after turning 50 and this adversity has made me a better trainer for my clients.

Where are you at?

Are you playing it safe and staying in your own comfort zone?

Is it time for some diversity with your own workouts so you can go through the fire like I did? Are you ready to come out better than ever to a place of abundant results on the other end?

A good shake up is probably just what you need.

A group of people are running a marathon on a city street.

Yesterday was the 40th running of the Twin Cities Marathon - The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America! If you are like me, you stop everything to take it all in. Marathon Day is one of my favorite days of the year! A happy place! So much goodness packed into one perfect fall day! And yesterday was no exception! 34 years ago my friend and I were curious. What is the marathon anyway? It was hard to visualize people running 26.2 miles from the Metrodome in Minneapolis to the Capitol in St. Paul. So without the assistance of Google maps, runner tracking apps or cell phones, we headed to St. Paul to "find the marathon." We rolled down our windows, drove up the Snelling Avenue hill and listened for people cheering. Sure enough we found it!

This is a sign that hung in my college football weight room. It meant a lot to me. It's what motivated me to put in extra work and ultimately become a scholarship athlete and starting offensive guard on the football team. It wasn't always like that though. My life could have been drastically different - and not for the better.
